Painted Octagonal Coffee Table - China Woods Store

This is an example of how spiritual traditions are applied to everday craft. This is a contemporary octagonal table. These tables, more properly stands, are for use in a temple setting, possibly as support for a statue or prayer wheel. Below the octagonal top are eight panels painted with deer. Each of the eight leg panels is identical, featuring a drawing of a zeeba. The zeeba figure is possibly derived from a demon created by the Hindu god Shiva. The zeeba, deprived of sustenance, devoured itself instead, leaving only its head and hands. The zeeba is a protector figure. A small sun and moon figure rests on top of the head of the zeeba.
