Free Performance on Saturday, September 27, at 3 pm
We are pleased to host a performance by Hua Jin playing the Chinese Zither. Hua Jin is the Mandarin Chinese teacher at the Confucius Institute at the University of Montana, and an accomplished player of the zither.
The Chinese Zither, commonly called the Zheng, is a traditional Chinese stringed instrument usually made of phoenix tree wood. The modern Zheng has 21 strings and movable bridges. For Western ears, the Zheng is similar to a harp. Compositions for the Zheng bear similarity to baroque music, Celtic music, and bluegrass.
By using a rhythmic breath it can produce a very graceful and beautiful melody, which is physically and psychologically helpful to the old and, in turn, has the function of prolonging life.
Masterpieces include Songs of Fishing Boats at Dusk, High Mountains Flowing Water, and Autumn Moon Over the Han Palace. The Zheng has found its way into contemporary music. Here is Michelle Kwan covering the Guns 'N Roses song, Sweet Child of Mine, and the Daft Punk song, Derezzed.
Mei Wei is perhaps the most well know Zheng player in the West. Her Vancouver string quarter, Red Chamber, is considered to be one of the greatest string ensembles in the world. Mei Wei has several videos available on her website.
We hope you will join us and give a warm Montana welcome to Hua Jin!
