Japanese Traveling Shrine
$995.00
This is a traveling shrine from Japan. It’s intricate and is beautifully made, and embellished in black lacquer and gold gilt. 19th century.
I think it may be Avalokitasvara, the bodhisattva who contains the compassion of all Buddhas, and is popular in Japan. Holding a lotus and a fan, this Buddha may be portrayed as male or female, most notably as Guanyin. The halo at the back is called a mandorla and shields the Buddha’s back.
